Academic Overview

The academic life of the school is one of the most important areas. Our well-qualified and experienced teachers inspire the children to love learning and promote an atmosphere of fun, exploration and discovery in their lessons.

At Thorngrove School we believe that all children are entitled to an education that will enable them to develop their full potential – be that intellectual, physical, aesthetic, creative, emotional, spiritual or social.  All children have individual needs, and it is our aim to provide a clearly structured curriculum that will enable them to achieve within a stimulating, challenging and supportive learning environment, with enthusiasm and enjoyment. We want our children to become skilled independent learners with an intellectual curiosity that will equip them for future life.

Our curriculum follows that of the National Curriculum Framework alongside the requirements of ISEB. We prepare children for senior school entrance exams, scholarships and Common Entrance assessment. We provide a broad curriculum, prioritising a strong academic core of subjects whilst developing pupils’ independent learning skills and resilience, through motivating and supportive teaching.

  • Last week Mrs Thomas accompanied seven of our Year 8 pupils to visit Treloars school for a movement and drama workshop. The morning was led by Katie Goad, a dance expert with specialist teaching experience in inclusive dance. The morning involved three sessions and a tour of the school and associated college.

The focus of the workshops was to build confidence, trust, communication and friendship between the Thorngrove pupils and Treloars pupils. Mrs Thomas was so proud of the patience, kindness, creativity and fun that the Thorngrove pupils gave to the morning. She commented, “the connections that were built within a short time were clear to see and the Treloars pupils were an inspiration to us all. The tour of the school was so interesting and gave us an insight into specialist provision and an understanding of the wider community. Altogether an amazing trip and one that will stay in our hearts for a very long time.”

On Friday our Year 3 and 4 girls were lucky enough to go to Bradfield College for a cricket coaching session. 🏏

It was a brilliant afternoon focussing on movement and fielding skills. They also used the nets to hone their batting technique and finished with a game of Diamond Cricket - one of their favourites! Thank you @bradfield_college for such a great time - we loved it! 💚💙
