Our Outstanding Teaching & Learning

Children thrive on a broad, inspiring curriculum and achieve oustanding results.

Thorngrove is proud of its academic record.  The school continues to have a 100% success rate at Common Entrance 13+.  This means that every boy and every girl have passed their exams to their chosen senior school.  A fantastic achievement!  Furthermore, in the past three years, twenty eight children have been awarded scholarships to their next schools, by showing excellence in Academics, Music, Sport, Drama, Art or D&T.  This was highlighted in the most recent inspection report which stated that ‘pupils’ all-round achievement is excellent in curricular, extra-curricular and after school activities, ensuring that the school meets its aim to provide a broad and inspiring education for every child’.

The breadth of the curriculum at Thorngrove is truly impressive (please see the subject overviews).  In recent years the curriculum has been expanded to allow for Drama to be taught as a separate subject.  The children’s performance skills and confidence have really taken off!  They can also have one-to-one speech and drama lessons with a qualified LAMDA teacher.    In addition to this, Design and Technology is taught in a purpose built D&T Centre.  The budding designers learn about construction, using tools and machinery to design and work with resistant materials including wood, metals and plastics.  Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) are vital in this ever changing world.  The children at Thorngrove learn a plethora of languages including French, German and Spanish.  These are taught on the curriculum as well as in clubs.  All children are encouraged to play their part whether it is on the stage or the sports field.  This instils in them a feeling of teamwork and confidence which will remain with them for life.

Children are continually assessed and monitored whilst at school through teacher observations, online assessments, end of unit tests and end of year exams.  Teachers give regular feedback to parents through parents’ evenings, effort grades and written reports.  Children on the learning support register are given individual educational reports (IEPs) and children who are gifted and talented are given appropriate support and challenging work.  Every child at Thorngrove is given every opportunity to reach his or her potential.
